British Warship Hears 5.0.5

A ship identified: by the Coast Guard service as the British warship Achilles, stationed approximately 600 miles south of the equator near Solomon Island, reported that it had heard two strong signals from Mrs. Putnam's plane, indicating that its last contact with the lost fliers had been at 220 p.m. on Saturday, Shanghai time.

The Coast Guard cutter Itasca reported that it believed Mrs. Putnam had missed Howland Island, which is little more than a mile long and less than a half-mile wide, because of the glare of the sun. She was believed to have flown morth-west and come down within 100 miles of the island.

The Hasca laid down a smoke screen during the afternoon yesterday in the hope of attracting Mrs. Putnam'' attention. According to unofficial estimates, the-Coast Guard cutter carried sufficient fuel to cruise for six days before returning to Honolulu to refuel.
