Wild birds that have been kept captive in small cages cannot be set free with safety to themselves without an intervening spell of qualified liberly. "They need to go again to school "=a flying school. Such an edücational foundation has been opened by Miss. Pauline Gower at the Home of "Rest for Animals which the R.S.P.C.A. maintains at Ember Farm, Thames "Ditton, Miss Gower; the air-woman daughter of Sir Robert Gower, chairman of the R.SP.C.A, flew over the "new flying school in her aeroplane before descending to declare it open. Some hundreds of members and well-wishers of the society were present and saw the first pupils of the flying school at exercise, In a roomy aviary, twelve feet high, in the open air, were a dozen son; birds. They included several chaffinches, two goldfnches—which are among the prettiest of all the British birds—a redpoll, like a sparrow with a red caste-mark on its brow, and a linnet that has lost its tail. Several of these little birds Were taken in q police raid in Whitechapel. The R: S.P.C.A. was able to prove that they were Wild "birds, and therefore kept in captivity illegally, though they had been offered for sale as aviary-bred, close-ringed birds, "Close-ringed" means that a ring was slipped on the bird's leg when it was nestling, only a few days old. Some bird-dealers have tried to evade the law by slipping rings over the feet of wild birds they have trapped, but whenever the R.S.P.C.A. has found such birds it has proved that their sale was illegal. One was shown horrid examples of diminutive cages, and even a small cloth bag with a stick inside for a perch, in which wild birds have been found confined.
