Tower of Strength

What makes Bishop Grave a re arkable man and a tower of strength to the Church in China the combination of this simple and retiring nature with a firm grasp of the fundamentals of life, His thoughts are thoroughly centred about the enternal verities and he is able to hold most consistently to these, when others are wandering in a maze of doubt or showing only a very human understanding of the situation, Times of stress, due to wars and revolutions, church divisions and troubles of all, sorts, including personal and private difficulties, find him unswayed passing emotions.

He has a clear mental conviction to where duty lies. To know the part that he has played in guiding the Christian missionary work in China during the past 50 years leads "ne to profound respect and admira-ton for the person whose decision was chiefly responsible for the course Ícilowed: People of the business and li tical world, upon whom rest important social responsibilities, have recognized this strength in Bishop Graves and have often sought to know his mind before their determining own policies.

The glory of it is that the mental clarity is all devoted to the Gospel ai Christ and to His Church. He knows how to judge between the doctrines of men and the commands the Chinese the responsibilities of the Christian work. Others have talked stout it a great deal and at times of nationalist outbursts have rather riddenly transferred authority to the Chinese, when there appeared no cther course to follow. With Graves the work from the ver was directed toward the quiet tr ing of able Chinese workers and. while others were giving little attention 10 the problem. he had prepared 1 ministry of Chinese men and women who have gradually but surely been able to assume the responsibilities of the work.

So true was this that the church at large in China has many times come to the diocese of Shanghai for workers. The present dean of the Central Theological School at Nanking and the first missionary bishop of the Chinese Church in Shensi were both clergymen from Shanghai. Bishop Graves has shown no favouritism or partiality in this and delegates authority only to those who appear able to bear it, whether Chinese or Amer can; and thus the Chinese have come to know that they gain only as they ere able to assume the financial and other burdens of the work "Devolution" of the Christian work depends upon ability of the Chinese v it on. N they want the ileges.they must share the responilities. AN of this has produced a most happy and healthy. fraternity among the workers, American and Chinese. Bishop Graves shows a most affectionate appreciation of kis trusted workers, and his genial companionship with them is something that cannot be known to the outsider,
