Immediate steps were taken to cast off Tatung from her moorings, and she was eventually towed off and successfully beached by the company's tug Chenyang. Owing to the success of this operation it was possible subsequently to salve her, and eventually bring her to Shanghai for repairs, which have now been carried out, and the vessel is again in commission.
Throughout and following these attacks, the coolness and resource shown by Captain Summerfield and his officers, and their conduct and control of the various manœuvres carried out under conditions of danger and difficulty, were worthy of the greatest praise and admiration. Mr. Morice, the Chief Engineer, despite his wounds, continued in charge of the Engine Room until the vessel was safely beached: thereafter he had to be taken to hospital.
Captain J. W. Hurst, Admiralty Pilot, who was at Wuhu with H.M.S. Ladybird when the raids took place, immediately boarded Tatung and offered his assistance to Captain Summer field: he took charge of the tug Chenyang and rendered most efficient and gallant service, both in rescuing a number of the crew of the Indo-'China vessel Tuckwo, which had also been struck by bombs and was heavily on fire, and in assisting with the salvage of Tatung and Pekin.
