A Police Success

The Canadian "Mounties" always get their man, The Shanghai Municipal Police have a similar reputa~ tion for persistence, at any rate on the bowling rink. After fifteen years they have at last acquired the custody of the Mercury Cup for at least twelve months.~ The occasion was happily honoured by Mr. W. J. Monk, the President of the Shanghai Bowls Association, who, in warmly congratulating the persevering winners, did not fail to bring to special notice the remarkable achievement of the other finalists. The Hongkew Golf Club cannot draw on a large store of talent for bowls. Yet they were in the final for the second time of asking, having been runners up in 1934. This year they brushed out of their way the Country Club and the Shanghai Recreation Club, the latter being particularly formidable opponents. It appears that the excitement of Saturday's match was unnerving to the contestants and they failed to reproduce the form which had won for each of them the prominence of finalists. Appropriately enough the Police were steadier than the golfers. It is good that a new name should appear on the Mercury Cup as it preserves interest in competitive bowls. Pleasant is it to observe how vigorously the grand old game flourishes in Shanghai. It has so many of the qualities which are of the essence of sportsmanship and it manages to maintain a dignity, friendliness and ease often denied to other games in these days of over-specialism and crowded galleries.
