Speculation Rife on Japanese Plans Chungking, May 29.
After the alleged collapse of the Jpanese offensive in Northern Hupeh, a lull has now returned to the Chinese war fronts, with neither side making any major military move, according to Chinese military dispatches reaching here.
These dispatches admit that there has been some fighting near the Hunan-Hupeh border, to the south of Yochow, where, it is stated, the Japanese have launched several attacks on the Chinese positions on the north bank of the Sintsiang River. gin AB Li Li iE
Chinese military circles do not attach too much importance to the present fighting there, It is generally considered that some time must elapse before the Japanese decide on their next move, whether to concentrate large forces in Northern Hupeh and Southern Honan, for yet another drive towards the Siangyang and Fancheng area in order to "avenge their crushing defeat," or whether to make new plans for another drive elsewhere—Reuter.
