Two years ago Sir Philip Game, the Commissioner of Police, started a scheme under which police horses were sold on a kind of hire purchase system. The experiment, he now reports, has been successful.
Approved applicants can obtain a horse for an annual fee with the option of buying the animal at the end of six years for £10. In the meantime the horse nominally is the property of the police and must be placed at the disposal of the Commissioner on demand. Two weeks each year the horse goes back to its original owners for training. One of the borrowing conditions is that the horses must not be used for racing, for haulage or for any work likely to interfere with police efficiency.
