Vatican Disturbed By Fascist Move

Special Concern Roused Over Church Marriages Of Jews and Italians

Rome, Oct. 8.

Racial measures adopted by the Fascist Grand Council have caused uneasiness in Vatican circles, especi iaNy those affecting the principle of Church marriage ordinances, but hope is expressed that legislative decrees will remove all grounds for f anxiety.

It is noted, however, that if Italian law should refuse to recognize a Church marriage between an Italian and a Jew, celebrated according to Catholic rites after the necessary dispensation has been granted by the Church, articles of the Concordat between the Vatican and the Itdlian Government would be directly chal-longed.

The general impression is that the anti-Semitic provisions are not very harsh. It is believed that a permit for an Italian wishing to marry a foreigner will not be arbitrarily withheld, but that it will not be granted to any officers of the armed forces or persons engaged in Government work.

Among the measures announced by the Fascist Grand Council yesterday were prohibition of marriages between Italians and Jews or other non-Aryans; prohibition of entry of foreign Jews into Italy; and expulsion of foreign Jews within six months.—Reuter,
