INISHING with a tremendous rush Cordon Rouge, with "Buffy"

Maitland in the saddle streaked past the field to win the main event of yesterday's races, the first day of the Shanghai Race Club's sixth extra, by two lengths and turned the tables on {Merrylight who had beaten him twice last season.

After running behind most of the way Cordon Rouge, late Waterloobey, drew level with the leaders at the last furlong and (then passed them to gallop on to win.

There was considerable delay Yn the start owing to Night Express doing the jig, The Mars doing "bucking tricks and Cordon, Rouge shying the gate, but when the field eventually got off, Night Express and -The Mars were stuck jand got off five lengths behind the field. Night Express made a "spirited dash to take the lead with Woodbridge, but at the Monument he faded and dropped out of the running while Cordon Rouge, Merrylight and Bober closed up on Woodbridge.

At the last furlong Merrylight shot into the Lead but was soon displaced py Cordon Rouge after a few yards, and Woodbridge took third place by withstanding Bober's challenge.

Merry Memories was the fly in the punter's ointment yesterday hen he won the fifth race to pay lucky backers the odd dividend of $230.40 for a win ticket, but the biggest dividend was paid in the forecast pool when Dow Jones romped home the winner with Going Slow second to pay $813.80 and there were only two tickets sold. The other race was won by favourites who ruled the day.

He took the lead early in the race and entered the straight a couple of lengths to the good and was never in danger of being beaten, Sober Morn who ran second all the way was passed at the last quarter by Mayorship and Saucy-light who finished second and third respectively. Things looked pretty rosy for Goldenlight in the second race until Don Pedro came with a spurt to overtake him and win by a length with New, General filling the-third berth. Taking the lead soon after the start Goldenlight in-made the running until the Monument when he was replaced by Brave 4 Raider who was nipped out of third piece by a very narrow margin. l—Race. % mile.
