Soon at the GRAND in return engagement, To Dine and Dance An excellent programme of divertissements, interspersed with two short ballets—produced by E. Eliroff—was presented in the Lyceum on Tuesday night, on the occasion of the producer's 30 years' association with ihe Russian ballet. To some perhaps, "Lo Spectre de la Rose," with its classical finesse, was the better of the two ballets, with Bobinina and Svetlan off being in excellent technique, but to the reviewer Dora Yanover's "An Clair de la Lune." was the more enchanting, The danseuse was @ picture of rhythmic grace, in which she fave a charming interpretation of a difficult theme, aided by the moonlight effects. Full marks also to F. Sakharova for the excellent accompaniment, restrained or vigorous as occasion demanded.
Each of the shorter items each was exceptionally fine, inasmuch as all these artistes are recognized as "tops" in their respective arts, Vertinsky, the matinee idol of the Russian community was called upon for several encores, and the "Soul and Body" of Seroc and Manjelei is the best piece of work by this team that the reviewer has been privileged to witness. The dainty dancing of the pre-adolescent Merkoulova, took the house by storm, but owing to her age her parents would not permit an encore.
(Much may be written about the remaining acts—it suffices to say that by their ce-operation, the show was the best of its kind ever done in Shanghai.—r.1.T.
