Minor Incidents In Danzig

Poland Takes Precautions As Thousands of Brown Shirts Enter City

Danzig, June 10.

Several new incidents took place here yesterday, as the Free City Political Police arrested an employee Gf the Polish Postal Services. Also taken in custody were his wife and his son, No motives were given for the arrests.

Several other Polish civil servants on Danzigs territory had their premises searched by the local police. One of the searches was conducted in the residence of an employee of the Polish Commissariat General in the Free City,—Havas, In the summer of 1938 the company's foreign staff at Kiukiang were not able to live on shore but were quartered in a steel pontoon. Those who know what Kiukiang summer conditions are like can imagine what life in a pontoon mus have been. The pontoon was moored in a place where the current was strong, and there was a risk of floating mines coming down on it. Protection against such a risk was provided by a suitable device some distance away, but even so the explosion of a mine might have oe" curred at any time and must have added very considerably to the anxieties of those living in the pontoon, In order to provide some escape from the heat in the interior of the pontoon. the staff were able io build a "bird cage" on the deck {ror some mosquito, screening that was salvaged from the shore. That their discomforts and inconveniences did noi cause their morale to deter-lorate is proved by the occasion now to be recalled.
