President Will Act

President Roosevelt revealed today that a comprehensive survey will be made immediately of the nation's delence needs and resources available fulfill these needs.

Late developments in foreign countries and the increasing international tension inspired the survey, the President said.

Mr. Roosevelt intimated there would be a considerable increase in budget estimates to strengthen the defence system but he did not offer specific estimate of the probable cost. He emphasized that the study would be made on the broadest possible base as the result of information from foreign countries.

The study, he indicated, will be concentrated on the problems of standardizing mass production of strategic weapons. He indicated that no public statement would be made until the survey is completed. As soon as it is finished, however, the survey will be made public.

"Result of Information"

Mr. Roosevelt said the study was launched a year ago on the basis of certain information which reached the United States. As a result of information received last month, the study was accelerated.

He indicated by this he meant technical information, but he added that the international political events played a large part in the situation.

Mr. Roosevelt recently announced the navy budget for next year probably would be increased by U.S.$800,- 000,000.—United Press.
