A Sampan Heroine

That stirring episode which, in some onlookers' minds, began the extraordinary machinegun and artillery land and water conflict in the Whangpoo's "London Pool" off Pootung Point on Friday, was well-described by a correspondent yesterday. The story revealed the heroism of the woman who rowed the sampan by which the alleged snipers tried to make good their escape. Under the heavy machine-gun fire which induced her passengers to dive into the river the woman yulohed imperturbably as if she were merely engaged in a Henli regatta, supposing that austere function permitted such a craft to enter its competitions. It is true of course that the machine-gunners' attention seemed fo be mainly directed toward the swimmers in the water when once the sampan had been emptied but for some con~ siderable time the little boat was under '#ifect fire and never did the lady at the yuloh falter. She successfully emerged into an atmosphere of comparative quietude past the Augusta whose complement gave her a sporting cheer in recognition of a gallantry which might have won a decoration in other circumstances.
