A Transport Achievement

In amplification of the reference lately made to the admirable way in which the China General Omnibus Company has contributed to the resumption of the city's ordinary occasions, it may be interesting to note that a full operation of the usual services within the area under the control of the Shanghai Municipal Council is now being maintained. Naturally the existing conditions frequently create emergencies which make adherence to a strict time-table exceedingly difficult. This will be appreciated by the public who are, apparently, making good use of the transport facilities thus provided on what is technically termed the "method of headway running". It is known that the Shanghai Municipal Council has appreciated the way in which the bus and tramway organizations have so promptly resumed their services and the Police have given ce-operation gladly, for this transport achievement has undoubtedly had an important influence on the preservation of law and order and on the process of restoring normality. When it is added that some twenty of the Bus Company's fleet have been struck by missiles—it will be remembered that one of them was heavily shattered during the bombing tragedy in Nanking Road but its driver with great presence of mind and courage steered it under its own "steam" into safety—a vivid illustration of the excellence of the staff's morale is at once provided, and the community's gratitude to the Company securely held.
