The Japanese Navy made its first appearance in Canton at nine o'clock this morning, when the Tsubame and Nasami, net-layers. accompanied by 35 barges and launches carrying 1,000 troops, tied up a mile downriver from Shameen.
Subsequently, the launches sailed upriver past Shameen, disembarked half their complement at Honam and half on the Canton side, and then turned about.
The Japanese flag was hoisted on top of the Customs House at ten o'clock this morning. There are now approximately 2000 Japanese troops in Canton.
The city is very quiet and deserted. Driving for an hour through the city this morning, Reuter encountered less than a score of Chinese. All fires have almost entirely abated.
Competition is very keen to get the first detailed picture account of the occupation of Canton to the outside world, Three newsreel cameramen are now racing towards Hongkong by various routes with a vivid photographic story of the Japanese occupation of the city.—Reuter.
