The Italian reinforcements of the garrison of the International Settlement came propitiously in time to celebrate the birthday of the Prince of Piedmont. So for the first time an Italian regiment—and that the famous Savoy Grenadiers—honoured an Italian occasion in the city. Off the Bund is the fine cruiser, Raimondo Monte Cucculi, so the Italian residents of Shanghai con feel that their country is not only making due provision for their protection but also contributing handsomely to the general defence of Shanghai. This spirit of ce-operation deserves special note at such a juncture, for Shanghailanders will recall the admirable spirit and bearing of the small contingent of Italian marines during the troubles of 1932. That tradition is now expanded by the imposing military and naval forces just arrived under the Italian flag. Significant of Italian relations with the British in Shanghai is the visit paid by the Italian Ambassador to Sir Hughe Knatchbull-Hugessen at the Country Hospital. Signor Cora has a special capacity for making friends and his visit of sympathy must have been a tonic to the distinguished patient.
