INTERFERENCE WITH' EVACUATION PLAN

Concern is felt locally for the safety of nearly 200 foreigners, most of them American missionaries, who are to be evacuated from Mokanshan and the Ningpo area, now it is reported that there is a likelihood of a boom being stretched across the Ningpo River by the Chinese authorities, About 129 Americans, four British and seven Germans have notified Shanghai that they want to be evacuated, Arrangements were made for the s. Hsin Peking to pick up these people and whoever else wanted to come, at Ningpo on September 22 and bring them to Shanghai. Those to be -evacuated include sixty children, fifty women and 26 men.

Nothing definite about thet proposed boom has been received in Shanghai yet. The next word about it is expected to arrive by the Captain of the s. Hsin Peking which left Shanghai on Wednesday to arrive at Ningpo yesterday. The boom, it is understood, would be stretched across the river at Chinghai, at the mouth of the river.

Such a boom, it is feared, would render impossible the evacuation of the Mokanshan people via Ningpo and by the s, Hsin Peking. A possible alternative route would be the Hangchow highway.

While the American missionaries have all been advised to come in from up-country stations and resorts, there is nothing of a compulsory nature about their evacuation.
