'This appeal, which has the full ap~ proval of Mr. J. W. O. Davidson, the Acting British' Consul-General Shanghai, is made for funds to assist the governors of the Cathedral school Henry Lester Endowment to provide playing fields and new school pre~ mises, both of which are urgently needed for the Thealth and general welfare of the scholars. It is thought that, the school being the only British school for boys in Shanghai, the objects of this appeal are peculiarly. appropriate for. the commemoration the coronation of the King, because he has always taken an abundant and active "interest in. the physical, educational and moral welfare of the youth of the nation. As one of many examples which might be quoted, it will be remembered that before his accession to the Throne the King. attended every year at a boy's camp at Southwold and" joined heartily in all the Sports of boys coming from all ranks of society. It is, therefore, confidently believed that' the objects of this appeal are such as would particularly commend themselves to our new and already belived King.
The present school was founded in 1906 by the Trustees of Holy Trinity Cathedral as the outcome of a generally expressed desire on the part of Britons in China fora school for British boys, with the subsidiary object that some- of them would be able to serve as choristers in. the Cathedral. Until' 1917 the school was governed by a committee appointed by the Cathedral Trustees.
that year, owing to the large increase in the number of che scholars. It became necessary to make an appeal for funds to enable it to con-fne, "Such funds were forthcoming and. thenceforward the school was managed by a Board of Governors, who contributed fixed sums anually to the school funds. In 1026 Mr. Henry Lester died. Under his will he left to the Cathedral Trustees the sum of Tis, 00,000 upon certain conditions. Of that sum is. 500,000 was to be expended in the erection on. the site of the then Deanery and Church' House (which included the then schoo! premises) of a new school building and playground witha new nery "and Church House. The ince of Tls. 100,000 was {0 be used for the equipment and general pur-Poses of the school. He also gave the school an endowment fund which brings {fo it an income of approximately $87,000 per annum.
The Present Management "After some hesitation, the Cathedral Trustees accepted the bequest, but only after obtaining the sanction of LIB. M. Supreme Court that they might charge the schoo! with ground Fent. On acceptance of the bequests the management passed out of the hands of the Governors into those of the Committee of Management sppointed under the terms of Mr, Lester's will, namely four nominees of the trustees of his estate and three aminees of the Cathedra' Trustees, This Committee still continues. to manage the school, but, as regards funds and property, is under the control "of the Cathedral Trustees, who are the legal owners of every thing appertaining to the school. The new buildings were completed in 1929. Tu explanation of the charge against the school for rent, it should bbe pointed out that under Air. Lester's will the new premises had to Be erected on the site of the former option to purchase at a late date and this fund might be used to buy a site for new school buildings, 20 that the new site would be available immediately a tenant or buyer were found for the existing school, The second essential condition, which refers only to the removal of the school, is that the necessary sane-ion thereto by HHO. Supreme Court can be obtained, It is though: that, provided a sound scheme can be presented to the court, no serious ifleulty will present itself in this connection, However, the 'Trustees feel bound to draw the attention of Inlending. subscribers. to this. consieration because, in view'ot the terms of Mr, Lester's will, no removal of the school would be' possible without, the "sanction of H.B.M. Supreme Court, In order, therefore, to obviate any possible misunderstanding on the part of subscribers as to the objects and application of the fund and possible legal diMieulties in. the future, the terms of this appeal are now set out shortly og fellows:—
