California: Democrats were victorious in California, but the $30 every Thursday pension plan was rejected by California voters with a plurality of more than 250,000 "no" votes. Three Republican Representatives were returned without opposition efter obtaining Democratic support in the primary but the Democrats retained a monopoly on California offices. The state polled the largest vote in its histor; Kansas: Reverted to normal position as a Republican state, largely due to tumbling farm commodity prices in recent months, Mr. Clyde Reed, former Governor, returned to the Senate to replace Senator George McGill.
President's "Purge" Vetoed Oregon: Political observers regarded Oregon as a barometer on New Deal popularity. The Democratic candidate for Governor, Mr. Henry Hess, was nominated by the Democrats in the first test of President Roosevelt's purge programme against anti-New Deal Democrats. His defeat today by Mr. Charles Sprague, Republican, was significant repudiation of the President's purge programme in Oregon, despite its earlier success.
Ohio: A smashing Republican victory with Mr, Henry Taft, son of the late President, replacing Senator Robert J. Bulkley in the Senate. President Roosevelt had personally endorsed Senator Bulkley who was one of the most important Administration leaders in Congress. The victory was typical of many Republican triumphs in that it weakened the Administration's leadership in Congress. The Republicans also won fifteen seats in the House, representing a gain of thirteen seats. The gubernatorial race also went Ro-publican.
