There is of course a prebless ture "Sacred and Profane Lo John Keating. In front of a huge cinema poster, showing a close-up of tone of those lingering kisses which happily seem to" be going out of vogue, are a Cockney mother wipe the nose of her off sp pains of suburban out." Not much difficulty here, you! may say, in solving the problem, but fon every count a fine vigorous study of modern life, With this thus be mentioned a small picture T found in the South Room of "Susannah and the Elders' the latter dressed like Non-conform~ ist ministers and Susannah hurrying from her bathing-pool (in which are still some beauties not unworthy, of the Elders' notice) while celestial personages, evidently modelled on. Sde Lawd* in "Green Pastures," Moat ona cloud above. It is all very "modernist, quite. mad and curiously delighitul, Of course T sought out the pie-tures by. the two Chinese artists—Mr. T. C, Chin and Miss Shoupl Yang." The former, who won six prizes and scholarships while he was student in the Royal Academy School, has a large picture ' of a Moroccan town seen from above, brilliant yet delicate, western raining but of indefinably Chinese perception, 'Miss Yang is purely classical—a group of peonies; a Paradise bird on 8 spray of apple blossom; and each with a verse of Chinese' poetry at the edge, I~ should like to hear a Chinese criticism of them; to my mind they are lovely. I should also like to hear a Chinese criticism of two large bird pictures by Western artists—a Mock of wild duck against the first rays of the Sun; a skein of geese hurtling through the air. They Are. vigorous lively pictures, but they miss that "hail to thee blithe spirit" touch, which puts all Chinese pictures of birds in a class by themselves.
