Driving Forces The Hardy North Tur ReaL Conruicr Berwrzw CHINA AND Jaran An Analysis of Opposing Ideologies. By Harley Farnsworth MacNair University of Chicago. University of Chicago Press, Chicago.

To the reader familiar with Dr.

MacNair's "Far Eastern International Relations" (in collaboration with Dr.

Morse) a considerable part of the material of his present work, "The Real Conflict between China and Japan," will not be altogether new. Dr. MacNair has turned from the more essentially political aspects of affairs to the cultural, to the habits and attitudes of mind of the Chinese and Japanese peoples. The attitudes, however, are those concerned with political relations, especially foreign relations, hence the appropriate subtitle, "An Analysis of Opposing Ideologies."

There are six chapters in all: one in introduction, two on China, two on Japan, and one of conclusions. An extremely interesting appendix is added, observations by a recent resident of the Japanese Empire, on the contemporary conflict in the Japanese Empire between Christian and Shinto ideology. There are twelve pages of reference notes and an index.

Text read from the printed page and cleaned; old type leaves the occasional error.
