1 ace One of the greatest sea hunts in history meanwhile was under way in an ^attempt to rescue the lost fliers, The search involved 3,500 men, including the crews of the United States Navy aircraft carrier Lexington, the U.S.S. Colorddo, the destroyers Cushing, Perkins, Lampson and Drayton, the U.SS. Swan, the Itasca, the British steamer Moorby and the s. Ontario. Naval seaplanes also were engaged in the search as well scores of radio operators and technicians throughout the world.

Newcomers to the searching patty to-day were the Japanese service ship Koshu and the Japanese aircraft car—rier Kamoi which received orders from Tokyo to join in the hunt for Mrs. Putnam and Capt. Noonan.

No elaborate plans were made here to-night to test the authenticity of messages believed received from Mrs. Putnam beyond general "listening in" and attempts to determine the direction from which any signals are heard.
