Barney Ross Turned Down

The Rizal Memorial Stadium boxing arena was barred to professionals after the last appearance here of Andre Shelaeff, the Oriental welterweight champion who died in San Francisco last December.

Cortes indicated that Barney Ross, who beat the Filipino on several occasions in the past prior to losing the welterweight title to Henry Armstrong, had offered to invade Manila and appear against Garcia.

Cortes, however, said he refused to arrange such a bout and was at present planning to bring to Manila a first class opponent.

Garcia has become a national hero in the Philippines since his technical knockout victory over Freddie Apostoli on October 2.

Although the pout between "Garcia and the opponent who is still to be named will be billed as a title fight, there has been no indication thus far that either the National Boxing Association or the New York Boxing Commission would recognize the affair as such.
