To the Editor of the "NortH-Cuina Dalny News"
Sm—I should like to reply through your columns to the correspondent who signs himself (or herself) Horse Sense in to-day's issue of your paper (July 16).
To my mind Mrs, Ricks' letter was very sensible indeed, as both Kuling and Mokanshan are places most unsuitable for dogs and I know personally of several dogs dying on their return to Shanghai. The dogs seem to get a form of anaemia (I do not know if this is caused by ticks in that part or not), but it requires a great deal of care and expense on the part of their owners lo get them. right, if ever, and the poor animal is put to all this unnecessary suffering.
fear Horse Sense must be suffering from the Silly Season he refers to in his letter not to know the hints given for the care of animals are very necessary in Shanghai; so many people and, I am sorry to say. many foreigners, do not know how to treat their pets. Dogs should not be exercised after 7 am 6 pin. this hot weather statement does not mean that Horse Sense cannot take his pet out of hi flat for the nec discipline of teaching clean Exercise means a good long wa a thing so many pet owners seem to forget. I consider anyone who cannot give up one hour.a day at least to the grooming and exercise of their dog should not keep one.
The hints on water are also needed, as I have been in many homes and seen the drinking bowls covered in dust. How would Horse ihe same glass of water all day long this weather? In conclusion I would like to say if Horse Sense would like to see some well kept and well beloved pets he will be very welcome io see mine. He may also hear a few home truths at the same time. My address may be obtained from the Editor.
