Mr. K, J. Holm who was recently being congratulated on his decoration with the knighthood of the Order of Dannebrog by King Christian X of Denmark, has retired from the Chinese Postal Service owing to urgent family affairs and so vácated the appointment of Director of Posts, Nanking. Thus a distinguished career of over 25 years has been terminated. Mr. Holm during that quarter of century has been stationed in many parts of China including Swatow, Tientsin, Peiping, Shanghai, Taiyuan, Chungking and Nanking. He has at Various times held charge of the districts of Shansi, Eastern Szechuen and Nanking. At this time the loss of a man of his ripe experience and personality is particularly felt by the Administration which has to face exceptional strain calling specially for those qualities so consistently shown by Mr. Holm during his long career. Mr. and Mrs, Holm have been exceedingly popular among all communities and will take with them the warmest good wishes of all on their departure to their home in Denmark. Shanghailanders who have made the trip to the Yangtze Gorges will gratefully remember the hospitality they enjoyed at the hands of Mr. and Mrs. Holm in Chungking when he was in charge at that headquarters, Soviet Russia. like the Irishman, seems to have opened her mouth and put her foot in it. Moscow which has always disclaimed any connection with or responsibility for the Comintern. has protested against Italy's adhesion to the German-Japanese Anti-Communist pact.
Count Ciano, remembering the Soviet's stand in the past, replied that the Pact was directed against the Comintern and not against Russia, and there were, therefore, no grounds for complaint.
Count Ciano, seems, very wittily, to have handed the Soviet Ambassador a perfectly good Ttalian lemon.
