Will Lord Baldwin start a new after-dinner smoking fashion? At recent dinner attended by Mr. Kennedy, the American Ambassador, and other distinguished guests, the former British Prime Minister was the only diner to smoke a pipe. He puffed away contentedly, apparently unaware that he was doing anything out of the ordinary.
Yet an after-dinner taboo on the pipe still exists in certain circles in London. In more than one fashionable restaurant customers are for-hidden to indulge in this form of smoking. Perhaps Lord Baldwin has done for the pipe what King Edward VIL when Prince of Wales, did for the' cigarette.
By producing a cigarette after a dinner, where such a thing had never been done before the Royal innovator started a fashion which had far-reaching results. Including the ending of the idea that a man had to put on a special coat to smoke, exchanging it for another before he joined the ladies.
