The highest receipts at the Municipal Abattoir in five years were registered in September owing to the considerable increase in activities, especially in the kill of oxen and buffaloes, according to the report of the Commissioner of Public Health.
Of special interest as regards the meat market and gold storage plant was the packing and freezing of 27,617 lbs, of pork for export. The two private pig slaughterhouses recorded a kill of 35,787 for the month, an increase of 3,726 over the previous month's figures.
A. considerable decrease was recorded in exports of both casings and lard, due to the European situation. Only 26 certificates were issued in comparison with 60 last month and three the corresponding month last year.
Business increased during the month and prices on the whole were more steady. Beef, pork and fresh vegetables were adequate with fish slightly less in evidence. Prosecutions mainly covered fraud, the possession of fraudulent scales, and the sale of unsound foodstuffs and cold drinks.
The average daily milk production es 33,075 Ib. and cream 254 lb. Of 18 samples for chemical analysis, we (unlicensed) were found to be below standard. Of 65 samples taken for bacteriological examination, 17 vere below standard. For repeated treaclies of licence conditions, mainly on account of dealing in unlicensed milk, licences of two dairies were suspended for three and four months respectively.
A second-hand motor truck, suitably converted to carry and drive a high pressure motor power spray pump, was put into use during the month. Sufücient flexible steel hose carried to enable the spraying of swamps and ponds within 200 yards of the nearest roadway or passable lane. In addition to a staff of twelve trained coolies and a supervisor, a hand-power pump and knapsack sprayers are carried for the treatment of mosquito breeding sources either too small for, or beyond the range of, the motor pump. During a six-hour working day this mechanised unit would be able to spray approximately 16,000 square yards of water surface with a resultant increase in the more reliable control of major anopheline breeding places and on more economical lines.
