Britain Ready To Combat Any War Emergency

Defence Minister Reassures House of Commons — SIR T. INSKIP REFUTES GIBRALTAR DANGERS

London, July 28.

Defence votes were passed in the House of Commons with only an insignificant minority. The Navy vote was carried by 325 votes to eight, the Army vote by 325 votes to seven and the Air vote by 327 votes to seven.

Careful preparation of necessary plans for any emergency or situation in time of danger, was described to the House last night by the Minister for the Ca-Ordination of Defence, Sir Thomas Inskip.

Plans relating to every possible theatre of operations, he declared, had been considered by expert committes, had been approved and sometimes revised by chiefs of. staff, and in every case except one, had been approved by the Government itself. The remaining case was now under the consideration of the Government.

Sir Thomas was closely questioned on the progress of his tasks by the Leader of the Liberal Opposition, Sir Archibald Sinclair, by Mr. Lees Smith, and also by Mr. Winston Churchill who expressed concern at various developments in their effect on Britain's vital interest in the Mediterranean.
