How London Bought Them

Milan, Dec. 30.

Much excitement has been created in Vene n art circles by the report that the London National Qallery had purchased four small painting at buted to Giorgione.

It is stated that the paintings, recently acquired in Venice by a Viennese art dealer for 4000 Lira, were resold by a London'firm to the National Gallery for £14,000, equivalent to 1,300,800 Li The paintings are attributed by Venetian art connoisseurs to the school of Giorgione and not to the master himself. They are only 19 em. wide and 18 high, depicting a pathetic love story.

Formerly in the possession of an old Venetian family, the pictures were sold last summer to the Viennese art dealer. 1 he Italian authorities have now ordered strict enquiry as Italian law forbids the Sfer to foreign countries of any work of art without special po sion.—Trans- Ocean
