Arthur Sopher. 10.00 Rev. M. Throop 2000 a new one to me, and I could only say that I would look it up on my return to Shanghai where I had American books of reference. Back here in Shanghai I searched dictionaries, encyclopeedias and ornithological works in vain... there was certainly "no sich a cutter" as Artemus Ward would have said. But I would not be defeated. By studying the very latest books from America I found that the little heron of this story is Butorides striatus amurensis—the Amur Little Green Heron—known on the other side of the Pacific as Butorides virescens, with the common name of Green Heron, but better known to country lads as "Shike-poke," "Fly-up-the-creek," or "Indian Hen." But best of all I like the comment of one of America's greatest ornithologists in the year 1872.. a very pretty and engaging little heron, in spite of the ridiculous name by which it is so well known to the great unwashed đemocracy of America." The words are his, not mine, and I only quote them to show that you never know what you will arrive at in this study of ornithology—not to mention the vagaries of the vulgar tongue.
