Lester Hospital Handles 200

Corridor of Dead and Dying Tells of Tragedy A corridor of fear and tears was the ground floor passage of the Lester Chinese Hospital yesterday. Fear was written all over the faces of the Chinese who streamed down the cor-riot looking for lost relatives or friends and too often they returned down that corridor from the mortuary pathetically grief-stricken.—One young Chinese Boy Scout ran frantic cally down the corridor and a few moments later came back slowly. weeping miserably. Others came pack with the same worried, fearful expression to continue the search in mortuaries of other hospitals.

The wounded, the dying, and the dead, hardly distinguishable often, had been carted away to regular and emergency hospitals in ambulances, trucks and rickshaws. About 200 leady victims were received by the ester Hospital on Shantung Road. Many could be disposed of quickly in-the mortuary, but for an hour the beds and even benches and chairs were littered to capacity.

Efficient organization by the hospital staff had the congestion cleared well before nightfall as those ex~ piring from wounds were taken down to the mortuary and those with "minor injuries only were sent out to emergency hospitals. All the severest cases were kept in the Lester Hospital. The. operating theatres, which had slowed down since "Bloody Saturday" were again working at full speed.

Throughout the afternoon more cases dribbled into the hospitals as more victims were found in Sincere's and others were brought in bloodstained rickshaws by relatives and friends. Some had been able to run, not uninjured, from the scene of the explosion and reported to the hospitals later for treatment.
