BERLIN BOURSE

Berlin, Jan. 3. The share market started the new Year on a note of optimism largely in consequence of the continued prevalence of those factors which had helped to enliven business during the last quarter of the preceding month. No difficulty was ex-Perienced in getting through the yearly settlements, and this in itself contributed to an increase of the need for new fields of investment. There was a tendency to use interest yields for the purchase of bonds but it was noticeable that a good deal Of this money was invested in the new German loan. Moreover the investing public has taken a favourable view of the business situation at the turn of the year which in Part accounts for the fact that the prices of the bulk of shares stood higher than the final quotations when the exchange closed on Friday last. Further stimulating factors were provided by the satisfactory report of the German Railways for 1937 and the AEG General Electrics report. AEG shares occupied the fore-ground of attention and started off 1% points higher, later on rising as much as 3 points. There was also a strong demand for big banks. Chemicals and Rhenish steels. The firm tone was maintained to the end.

Callmoney stood at 3% to 3% per cent.—Trans-Ocean.
