Communist Party

Full Session to Precede Eighteenth Congress

Moscow, Jan. 27. plenary session of the Central of the Communist Party Washington, Jan. 26.

The fall of Barcelona and the consequent brightening of the Spani Nationalist hopes for victory in the Spanish civil war today served to dampen further the prospects that the United States might lift its embargo on the shipment of arms and mu tions to Spain. Such action, it was pointed out, would antagonize General Francisco Franco, leader of the victorious Nationalists.

Despite the reverses suffered by the Spanish Republican forces, the Spanish Republican Embassy issued an optimistic statement here today, expressing hopes in an ultimate Republican victory.

Impartial Congressional circles indicated that the lifting of the American embargo appeared most unlikely unless President Roosevelt decided io intervene in the Spanish civil war personally. Although the President was reported personally in sympathy with the Republicans, it was not believed he would attempt to intervene at this late date.—United Press.
