The Rev, H. T. Carnegie, Rural

Home in the Parish

Dean of Hampstead: "There is a great deal to be said for having a clergyman's home in a parish, particularly in country parts, I see that the memorial suggests that the priest might live in a cottage with his humble parishioner:

"Well, I am not sure that the humble parishioners' would like that, The place that the average vicar or rector and his wife have taken is that of homely, friendly people with a home to which they can ask their people."

The Rey. W. G. Arrowsmith, St Luke's, Chelsea: "In most parishes they very much prefer having a married man. They fully realise the advantages of having a woman at the spending a good deal of her time in parish work.

In fact, when an incumbent is being appointed, one of the first questions his parishioners ask is, Is he married, and what's she like?
