A year or so ago the gangster film seemed to be almost dosd Certainly the age of the heroic tough hed pas: ed, but he had not quite passe oil the screen because he remained as the unsuccessful enemy of the all-conquering G-Man. Presumably producers believe that the big public must have violence in one form or another. For a while the boxer had his dey. The punch supplied the excitement which had J|been provided by the gun. Then there loomed up a short series of war and spy "sensations" There was plenty of shooting, some air raids and violence ruled. But war pictures came very close to the debateable zone of international politics and international politics are dangerous when it comes to world marketing.

The gangster hurts no political susceptibilities, so among the pictures released or about to be released there are "Gang Billets," "Flying G-Men," "Federal Man-Hunt," "They Made M. a-Criminal" and "Homicide Bureau. This does not exhaust the list, but is sufficient to indicate the tendency of the next film cycle. It is expected that Jemes Cagney will play an important part in more than one of these pictures.

Who will appear at the French Club's Saturday dinner dand The Friend of Man Gangsters and G-Men ride in armoured cars and shoot out of the little funds, a loan was secured to secure the lease of the land on which the church has been built.

"To guard against any risk as to the future of the church an appeal has been made to all Russians in Shanghai to help in some small way to purchase the land on which their church stands and, with this in view, the carnival ball has been organized.

There are many attractions at the ball which will be filmed throughout by a movie-cameraman. Attractions include the "March of the Carnival," performed by the ladies of the French and Russian societies, and a special floor show.
