Another Busy Day

FOR BRIGADE

Shells, Fires and Bombs Give Men Hectic Time The morning of the 9th inst. was quiet, but in the afternoon there was considerable activity in the fighting section of the Brigade.

At 1430 hours a call was received to Tatung and Sinza Roads, the report being that a shell had struck a Chinese house causing an outbreak of fire and injuring several persons. Fire engines and an ambulance responded from Sinza Division and located the house but could find no trace of fire. After some little delay it was found that two Chinese females had been injured and they were conveyed to hospital in a brigade, Ambulance. While inves-igations were being made, two more shells fell in the vicinity, fortunately without causing injury to Brigade personnel.

Later in the evening, slight damage was caused to a shop in Sinza District, presumably caused by someone carelessly lighting a cigarette when passing a gas meter and piping connected. to the premises on which work was being done. A Gas Ca. employee was injured while making an effort to shut off the gas supply and was conveyed to hospital for dressing The explosion was entirely accidental.

Toward midnight, a message was received to the effect that the China Import and Export Lumber Co.'s yard located on the North side of Yangtszepoo Road, was on fire. Yangtszepoo Division responded and found that a large portion of the lumber yard was alight, Lines were laid and the most valuable sections of the premises protected against the advance of the flames and a message was transmitted to Central Watch-room stating the nature of the outbreak and requesting assistance. In response to this appeal, one pump with a "Special Squad" from Central Division turned out and was engaged for over four hours after which time it was found possible to return, leaving the others to complete the work of extinction.

The Yangtszepoo Division machines returned to the Station at 08.32 hours. one officer and a detachment being left on the premises with lines laid from the private installation.
