CUBS TROUNCE RIY

GIANTS — Still Behind Leaders in the National League — SPECIAL SERIES WINNER TO MEET YANKEES

New York, Sept. 21.

In spite of a 7-8 victory over the New York Giants, the Chicago Cubs are still one and one-half games behind the National League leaders as a result of the opening encounter to-day of the series to determine the definite leadership between the two teams.

Gabby Hartnett of the Bruins played a major role in the Chicago victory. He lashed out a triple, a double and a single to be responsible for bringing in four runs. The Cubs brought their guns into play in the first inning, scoring four runs, They added another in the fifth and tallied two in the eighth.

Much interest is focussed on the current series, for the winner will become the favourite to garner the 1937 pennant.

Because the Detroit Tigers were only able to split @ double programme with the Boston Red Sox; the Yankees, though idle, strengthened their hold on the leadership of the American League.
