British circles emphasize that the Government's suggestions continue to form the basis of discussion with the Arabs, and have undergone no modification.
Mr. Neville Chamberlain, the Prime Minister, and Mr. R. A. Butler, ihe Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, had a talk in the Premier's room in the House of Commons this evening with Dr. Chaim Weizmann, Mr. Ben Gurion and Dr. Stephen Wise, Jewish leaders.
Dr. Weizmann reported to the Prime Minister the attitude of the Jewish delegation, and tomorrow afternoon there will be a further informal talk between some of the Jewish delegates and the British delegation.
It is understood that Mr. Mac-Donald and Mr. Butler today had a conversation with Lord Halifax, the Foreign Secretary, preparatory to tomorrow's talk.
The meeting between the British and Jewish delegates lasted for about an hour, and well-informed circles state that the Jewish attitude is that they cannot accept the British suggestions as a basis of discussion.
It is not known at present whether the Jews intend to submit counterproposals, but if they do it is believed that the British Government will give them full consideration.
