London, Mar. 2.
An attempt was made today to blow up a bridge near Wednesbury, in Staffordshire.
A terrific explosion, heard for miles around, occurred about midnight, but it was not discovered until several hours later that a high explosive charge had been placed in a culvert beneath the Birmingham Navigation Canal.
The wall of the culvert was blown out, but the cracks in the embankment were too small to allow the water to escape. Had the attempt succeeded, thousands of tons of water would have flooded the surrounding countryside.—Reuter.
