Captain J. W. Hurst, or, has been appointed the mew Yengtze Admiralty pilot to replace Captain R. Pote-Hunt who, after 37 years' service, is retiring to England.
Coming from his home in Sunderland in 1925 to join Messrs. Butterfield & Swire in Shanghai, Captain Hurst sprang into the public eye in November, 1926, by playing a heroic role in one of the greatest dramas ever enacted on the China Seas. As the Second Officer of the s. Sunning, Csptain Hurst led the little group of officers in retaking the ship from a band of blood-thirsty pirates in a gun-battle in which many were killed and in then &ghting the fire which blazed over the after end of the ship, which was on her way from Shanghai to Hongkong.
It was one of the most remarkable adventures ever to have been experienced along the China Coast and for his bravery, Captain Hurst received a pair of binoculars and check for Tls. 807.73, from the Shanghai Marine Underwriters' Association.
