TOWARDS WHAT?

The Japanese Government is, apparently, having none to easy a time at the hands of certain members of the Diet who have been asking awkard questions and, it seems, is lieely {o continue doing s0. pened to show that some members of the Diet are highly critical of the Government's econo-ime policies. It is possible that heated debates may yet occur and that there will be some delay' in the Diet's consideration of important budget measures. The announcement that {he Government is planning to establish State control of the nation's profit-making industries may lead to further criticism when the matter comes to be considered. Tt is interesting to rote, however, that there is no suggestion that any of the questions asked have indicated any disapproval of the hostilities which Japan. is: waging in China, That may come in the future, but for the moment it would seem that, while in principle the various Japanese polit" cal parties are in agreement with the Gover ment, in matters of detail they are still ready to administer whatever criticism they may consider to be necessary. The complete economic mobilization of the whole nation is quite Clearly contemplated by Prince Konoye. He expects there will be friction as the plan is developed towards complete State control, but of the intention of the Government to force it through there can be no doubt. It is becoming Inereasingly clearer that important changes are being made, in the whole structure of Japanese Ife, and while they may for the moment appear to be but temporary changes, the possibility of their becoming permanent is something which cannot be disregarded.
