OW that the tumult and the shouting of the "war" has dwindled into an ordinary every-day undertone, the thoughts of Shanghai sportsmen have been exploring the prospects for winter activities. Of this brand were the rugger men who met Yesterday evening to plan for the coming season.
Prospects may have appeared dull up to a week ago, but it was divulged at last night's annual general meeting of the Shanghai Rugby Union Football Club that local and other rugger fifteens are to find a good test from the Welch Fusiliers who come to Shanghai with a reputation well worthy of their forebears—the Welch regiment which several years ago brought everlasting fame to the name of "Welch" on the rugger field.
The Welch Fusiliers who were brought up here to assist the present garrison strength have an enviable reputation in Hongkong and other paris, They have played against the best of rugby teams and have come off with their colours flying. It. Rhys-Jones, who represented the Regiment at last night's meeting, indicated that the local teams will be given a good test by the newly ar-Rived British regimental team which contained the majority of the British Army players who were picked to come to Shanghai two years ago, and actually made the trip, but could not play a match as the whole team was under quarantine during its stay and had to return to Hongkong without having played a single game. Eleven of the Royal Welch Fusiliers were picked for that side. That is but one indication of the strength of the going—for despite losses through transfers, they retain the best of their forwards and if their halves problem could be solved they will be much a Strength to be contended with.
The following office bearers were elected for the season:
President, R. M. Saker; Vice-Presidents, E. S. Barraclough. Dr. T. M. Burton; Commandant, L. Fabre, H. W. P. MeMeekin, H. Martin, G. D. Nicholl and R. D. K.'Silby: Captain. K. H. Roe; apt aim, A. M. Kennedy; General mittee, W. J. Richmond, H. W.
