Girl's Terrible Ordeal In Flooded Stream

Judge Regrets He Cannot Order Flogging Passing sentence of seven years. penal servitude on a 21-year-oid miner for attacking a girl, who was nearly drowned in a mili stream, Mr. Justice Croom-Johnson, at Carlisle Assizes recently, said: "You are fortunate not to be charged with murder. I am astonished to find that with regard to such a crime the court has not the power to administer a flogging, which would perhaps teach you something of the pain and suffering that you inflicted upon this poor young woman.

The man, James McCarron, of Workington, was found guilty of rape. He was formally acquitted of attempting to murder the girl, Mar-jone Saulters, 20 by attempting to drown her. Charges of assaulting her with intent to commit a felony, attempting to choke her to render her incapable of resistance, and inflicting grievous: bodily harm were dropped, states the "Daily Telegraph and Morning Post."

Mr. B. S. Wingate-Saul, prosecuting. said that on Nov. 12 Miss Saulters and McCarron, who had known each other for a few weeks, went to Mill-field, Workington) a place-frequented by courting couples.
