Christopher Columbus May Be Canonized

Proposal Before Ecumenical

Council Rome, Mar. 11.

The impending convocation of the Ecumenical Council, probably in 1940, was again prominently reported today by the "Stampa," which declared the Christian body would proclaim the canonization of Christopher Columbus, discoverer of America.

In this connection, religious quarters indicated today that nobody knows Pope Pius XII's intentions and they pointed out that the idea of canonizing Columbus is not new. It was first put forward as far back as 1892, on the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America.

At the time, the idea had to be abandoned because it was found difficult to clear up certain aspects of the great navigator's life—Havas.
