Fighting Pirates it is common knowledge that the present war has given new audacity to pirates, who have of late boarded many a Chinese and foreign vessel. But onside the Russian colony not many people know of the active róle played by Russian youth in the fight against these pirates. The initiative for making use of Russian youth in this direction belongs to the shipping firm Jardine, Matheson & Ca, who have acquired two armoured motorboats cruising between the smaller ports of the Yangtze in which vessels of the company dock. Each motorboat has three Russian guards, who are under one chief guard. They are armed with rifles and revolvers. They receive their orders by wireless. Each guard receives $110 upwards. 'They are given special uniforms and but eat on their own, buying m a common fund. Their Work often necessitates several weeks' stay away from Shanghai, but once a month they have one or two days' rest in this city. All these guards are young men between 20 and 30, Of good health. They are satisfied with their work, which offers plenty of fresh air and thrills thrown li As soon as a wireless message tells them of the whereabouts of pirates they make full speed ahead for the latter and engage them in rife fire The pirates usually retreat precipitately. When not engaged in this work, the young guards listen to the Bae play chess and read. On other ats and in other shipping companies Rusgians also work as guards against pirates, sailing the Yangtze as well north and south along the China coast. Wages paid by the different companies vary. Quite a number of young Russians work on these ships as wireless-operators.

Archbishop Victor, Head of the Russian Orthodox Mission in China, who last month visited Tientsin, Mukden, Tsingtao, Dairen and other cities of China, arrived in Shanghai a week ago. Archbishop Victor has noted the large rôle played in the life of the Russian colony in Tientsin by the Very Rev. Michael Rogojin, recently transferred there from Shanghai. Mukden is steadily be-Coming a cultural centre. As in Dairen, up to a thousand Russians live in that city, and their relations with the authorities are amicable. The heads of the Russian colonies in Dairen and Mukden are careful to preserve the churches in perfect condition. All the churches have excellent choirs. Tsingtao, too, is shortly building a large Orthodox church in the style of the 16th century, which new edifice will undoubtedly serve to further adorn the summer resort. Pine Victor notes with satisfaction that ili spite of the hard times being experienced in emigration, the general material position of Russians in China has hot deteriorated since 1998, Wide-scale renovation was recently carried out in the Russian churches and hostels of Peking, where the centre of the Russian Orthodox Mission is situated. This centre now takes care of 52 Russians and more than 100 Orthodox Chinese.
