Warships Shell Forts

About 8 o'clock on Friday morning, two Japanese warships moved closer to the shore and started shelling the forts and the wireless station but little damage appeared to have been inflicted. Spectators on the heights at Kulangsu said that the forts replied vigorously and stter a short engagement the two warships withdrew in the morning mist and steamed out to sea.

In port during the air raids were the B. & S. steamers Shantung and Anking (bound for Manila), and the British India s, Santhia also spent a few hours there. H.M.S. Duchess, destroyer, is the British guard ship.

Passengers on the Shantung had a "ringside seat" view of the bombing of the city as the Japanese planes swooped low over the steamer and their bombs could plainly be seen dropping on their targets in a city which has an efficient air-raid warning system and sees that its citizens take shelter, immediately an aeroplane is reported, Along the waterfront, sandbag emplacements have, been erected and a number of dugouts dot the central area and decorate the ut gardens of buildings along the waterfront
