The possession of the Philippine Islands lightens the military and naval duty of the United States and, contrary to some impressions, it does not increase the danger of war, Captain William D. Puleston, retired chief naval intelligence officer said yesterday.
Speaking before the American Historical Association, Capt. Puleston indicated that the United States needs a naval base in the. islands in the event it is necessary to protect United States interests in the Far East. The Philippines, in effect, pay the cost of such a base through the extra trade the United States attains from the islands, he said.—United Press.
