Chungking Waits Visit Of British Envoy Large Gathering of Foreign Diplomats Expected

Chungking, Dec. 29.

Chungking will have the largest gathering of foreign diplomats next month with the expected arrival of the British and American Ambassadors, Archibald Kerr and Mr. Nelson T. Johnson:

Though the news has not been published here, the early arrival of Sir Archibald Kerr is generally known, and the public is showing considerable interest in what issues he will discuss with the Chinese Government during his visit.

Mr. Nelson T. Johnson, who spent Christmas in Pziping, will return to Chungking early in January.

The French and Soviet Ambassadors, M. Henri Cosme and M.

Alexandre Semionovitch Panaoushkine, are already here. The Turkish Minister end the Chilean Charge d'Affaires have just presented their credentials. Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany have resident representatives here—Reuter.

Early Settlement Hoped For Mr. Y. Suma, official spokesman of the Gaimusho told me today in referring to the Tientsin situation, that the fundamental issue is the monetary question, He said that this question was still unsettled, but that the Japanese government hoped for a settlement "in the very near future." He could not say whether a settlement would be brought about in January, and added that a few minor administrative questions remained to be settled, although these could be straightened out very easily.

He also renewed his optimism regarding the impending formation of a new Nanking Government under Mr. Wang Ching-wei. In turning to Soviet-Japanese relations, Mr. Suma said that some differences of opinion between the two countries still existed with regard to the fishery agreement. He was hopeful of an early settlement, however, and added that as Japan's own attitude on the subject had not yet been decided upon, it was better to be prudent so as not to "disturb the tranquility of the Pacific by a premature expression of opinion which might be misunderstood in various quarters,"
