(Continued from page 5)

Observers noted about twenty mis siles passing between 415 and 439 pin. but owing to the extremely visibility it was impossible to t exact direction in which they were going. A sharp look-out was being kept from the tower of Siccawei Observatory, which was visited by several French headquarters officers between 4 and 5 o'clock.

Residents of the district near the western end of Avenue Joffre were seriously alarmed by the proximity of the shelling, some of them hosti! leaving the area for others they considered safer. A foreign resident, in a tram at the terminus, informed the "North-China Daily News" that he saw shrapnel bursting in the air over the Concession at that spot, adding that all in the neighbourhood quickly ran for cover as the bombardment began. The French police authorities, however, denied that any shells had burst in or over the Concession nroper, The influx of refugees to Siccawei continued yesterday and it was estimated that well over 8,000 were being cared for by nightfall. The fighting in the western area south of the Soochow Creek is responsible for the large number of new arrivals.
