A Misapprehension

While engaged in getting out these notes during the week, I was amazed to hear that there is a definite impression in some circles that it is impossible to get a radio receiver in Shanghai which will definitely bring in London, Paris and the other short wavers. I could be sarcastic and say that I must have been labouring under a delusion with my own set, but I will refrain, and point this out;—The set I own is an ordinary all-wave receiver, purchased in Shanghat and costing, complete with aerial, just over $300. On this set, I have, without really trying, picked up regularly, indeed practically daily, Daventry (London), Berlin, Rome, Paris, Hongkong, Manila, Moscow, Praha, Madrid (this, I admit, is an early morning station), Buenos Aires, Huizen (Hol. land), Tokyo, Sophia, California, Sydney, Malbourne, Perth, Lisbon, and dozens of others, Those of you with short wave sets will realize that there is nothing very special in this, but this paragraph is directed to those who have not got sets and hesitate to buy one. To these, I make the following suggestion: Get in touch with one of the several short wave radio suppliers, have them install a set, with aerial, on approval for one week. Any genuine dealer will do this for you at no expense to your self; if you are not satisfied, don't buy the set. Unless you are simply surrounded by neon signs, flashing lights, power companies, ete., I think you will not hestiatate about buying the set after it has so demonstrated itself, Matter of Chi A glance at nouncements of the preliminary an several new radio sets this year shows that there is a growing tendency to introduce all. wave receivers in which the circuit is designed to perform two functions.

For long range work the circuit pere forms as a superhet, but a switch can be thrown into play whereby certain stages are cut out or circuit changes are made so that when local or quali reception is desired, a straight T.R. circuit is employed. Is this the herald of the beginning of a return to straight circuits?
